Instead...we will be joining with Orem teens at the Orem Library Media Auditorium to watch "The Nightmare Before Christmas"

This program will be on TUESDAY December 6th at 4:00 pm at the OREM LIBRARY!

If you bring a non-perishable food item with you (like a can of corn or something similar) you will be given a pass for a free DVD rental at the Orem Library.

The 2010 Teen Read Week Theme was "Books With Beat." The Provo City Library chose to have a poetry contest called Tweet Your Beat and below are the entries in this contest!

Announcements

Chris Heimerdinger is speaking at the Library Tuesday, September 18 at 7:00 pm in the Young Special Events Room #201.
Teen Read Week is October 15-20. We will have a writing/art contest, and every participant will be entered into a drawing for an iPod Nano. Watch for information.
There will NOT be a TAB meeting in October. Instead, turn in your Oink! submissions by October 6.

Discussed Oink!—we are redesigning our quarterly publication. Watch for the new edition in October.

Discussed Summer Reading—next year TAB would like more active programming, instead of passive programming. Mary Beth will post a poll on the TAB blog (the poll is on the right sidebar), and everyone can vote for their favorite activities to consider for next summer.

Volunteer Wednesdays

We are making dyecuts for Children's story time on Wednesdays this summer. We need 1-2 people for each session of 1-2 hours. We're working on the following Wednesdays: June 27, July 11, July 18, and July 25. Let me know if you're available to help any of those days (we'll mostly be working in the mornings). If you need volunteer hours for school, this would be great for you!

Be a Volunteer!

The Children's Department needs volunteers this summer. Volunteers are needed to help with Science Adventures and Stories and Crafts programs Tuesdays-Thursdays from 9:30-10:30 and 11-12 this summer. If you're interested, email Mary Beth ASAP. We also need people to help prepare dye cuts (cutting out letters with a special machine) for story time. If you'd like to come in periodically (or even just once or twice) throughout the summer to help with that, let Mary Beth know.

Announcements

Check out the New Teen Books at the Library blog on Teen Scene. Leave comments if you’ve read one of the books listed.
Anjie’s working on the Homework page of Teen Scene. Watch for it.
We should be getting a pair of traveling pants for our next TAB meeting. If they don’t come then, we’ll still be part of the program later in the year.
Oink! is coming out next month. Turn in your assignments by the next meeting. If you need ideas/info, talk to Dani or Lizzy.

Oink!

Last month it was suggested that we change the name of Oink!. New suggestions: Keep it as Oink!; The 411; The Happening or Happenings; Zook, Zoink, Zerk; The Element or Element. The suggestions will be put in the next copy of Oink! and readers will get to vote on the name.

Summer Reading

The Summer Reading Theme is Get a Clue @ Your Library.
The Teen program will be based on a kidnapping mystery of Harry Potter. Seven literary characters will be suspects and each week the activity will be a clue to solve the mystery.
Program ideas—CSI-type program—detectives or police officers come talk about their jobs, what they really do, how it’s the same/different from CSI; do another mystery in the attic. The CSI program idea was very well received. MB will talk to the programming team about it.
Final party ideas—TAB would like to dress up like the suspects and do the unveiling of the kidnapper at the grand prize party. Go over all of the clues from the summer, have people divide into groups based on who they think is guilty, reveal the kidnapper, eat treats, and have the grand prize drawing (extra entry for correct suspect guessing). If possible, hold in attic.

Anniversary Movie

We're going to see the Santa Clause 3 for our anniversary celebration this Saturday, December 9th. We'll meet at the Provo Town Center Mall Cinemark (outside near the ticket booths) at 1:30. The movie starts at 1:50 and lasts about an hour and a half, so if someone's picking you up, plan to have him/her come around 3:45. If you know for sure that you'll be coming, please let me know ASAP so I can be sure to have your ticket. The movie will replace our regular TAB meeting for the month.

The TAB Read poster came back from the printer's. It's bigger than we wanted, so it doesn't fit in the frame, but we can display it on the easel.

Fiesta tickets are available starting Monday. They go quickly, so get them soon if you want them!

Business

Who uses MySpace? Several people very opposed to MySpace, a couple use it.
Stormbreaker isn't coming to Provo. Which movie should we see? The Santa Clause 3 won! We'll try to see it at the beginning of December.
Manga--who reads it? Mary Beth's current choices--Fruits Basket, Runaways, and Bleach--were cheered. TAB members gave her more suggestions.
Marked Cliffsnotes titles for books that TAB members have had to read for school.

Put up Multicultural Books display.

We will not have a regular TAB meeting in December. Watch the blog for information on seeing The Santa Clause 3.

A few updates:

The Stormbreaker release date has been moved back to Oct. 13, so we're tentatively planning to see it as a group for our NOVEMBER meeting. Current TAB members can attend for free. If friends want to come, they'll need to buy their own tickets. We'll discuss this more at our next meeting.

I'm preparing the October edition of Oink!. Thank you if you've already sent me your assignment. If you haven't, please send it to me or bring it to our next meeting.

The next meeting is Saturday, October 14 @ 1:00 and we'll probably meet in the Gates Computer Lab.

The Teen Read Week short story contest guidelines and DDR information is now on the web. Submit a short story or come to the DDR party to enter the iPod drawing!

Stephenie Meyer, author of Twilight and New Moon, will be at BYU THIS Friday, Oct. 15. She'll be at the bookstore signing books from 2:00-3:30 and will speak at the Library auditorium (it's free!) at 3:45.

Meeting Notes--Sept. 9

Announcements

Mary Beth has new ARCS and a copy of Teen Ink. Talk to her if you'd like a copy of any of them.
The next Oink! should be out in October. If you don't have an assignement, choose one and get it to Mary Beth by the next meeting.
The blog is fully functional. Check it for announcements and news. From now on meeting notes will be posted on the blog. A link to the blog is on the TAB webpage.

Discussed Teen Read Week (Oct. 16-21)

TAB would still like to do DDR and a short story contest.
For DDR--everyone who participates would be entered into a drawing for the iPOD; do half an hour of instruction/fun and half an hour of tournament
For short story--make required words, activities, and places to include in the story (like the It's Alive short stories)
Best day for DDR--Saturday, Oct. 21 in the afternoon

Chose new design for the TAB webpage. We hope to have it up this month.

Worked on booklists.

Chose movie for TAB anniversary party: Stormbreaker (based on the Anthony Horowitz book!)

The next TAB meeting will be Saturday, October 14. We are tentatively planning to see Stormbreaker for the meeting.

Announcements

Grand Prize party pictures are on Teen Scene under What's Happening.
The What's Happening page has changed. Take a look.
The new copy of Oink! is out. Copies are in the Teen Corner and online.
This year instead of spooky stories in the attic, we're doing a scary movie in the attic.
TAB has a blog (this is it!). Talk to MB if you have suggestions.
We'll be voting on the CLAU books in October. If any of the nominations look interesting to you, start reading!
We have a mock up of the TAB Read poster. We might try one or two different styles before we have the poster printed.

Options from staff programming team: art/photography contest, scavenger hunt, DDR tournament, ceramic/pottery workshop, quiz/writing contest
TAB favorites: DDR, art/photography and writing contest
Other TAB suggestions: drop the quiz; maybe do the art/photography contest with other media (like video); put everyone who participates in a drawing for the iPOD and then have prizes for best art, best writing, etc.; DDR for Teen Read Week and contests in the winter?

Filled out surveys about magazines in the Teen Corner and favorite books, CDs, and movies.
